A parent’s guide

Is the cave too scary for a child?

Many parents wonder whether their child will dare to go into the cave. Let’s go through what the cave is really like — and why it suits a more cautious explorer too.

“I wonder if our child will dare to go into the cave?” is one of the most common questions parents ask us. It’s a good question — and the short answer is that, most of the time, yes. Luolaseikkailu is designed as an exciting adventure, not a frightening experience. Let’s go through what actually happens in the cave, so you can judge it for your own child.

It’s not a haunted house

The cave adventure is dim and atmospheric, but there are no scares, surprises or jump-outs. Every explorer gets a headlamp to see the way ahead, and a helmet for protection. The tunnels, chambers and hidden gems are there to be explored and marvelled at — the whole idea is the joy of discovery and adventure, not ramping up the tension.

You can always get out quickly

One of the most important factors for safety — and peace of mind — is that the cave has 7 clearly marked exit points a few metres apart. If a child starts to feel too anxious, they can get out at once from the nearest point. Nobody gets stuck, and there are no long dead ends that are hard to come back from.

The child goes at their own pace

Luolaseikkailu is not a guided tour where you have to keep up with everyone else. Staff give a short safety briefing before the adventure, after which the group explores on its own, at its own pace. The bravest can dive into the narrowest passages, the more cautious can explore the roomier routes — and everyone goes at their own pace. The cave adventure suits ages 5 and up, and the most common age is 5–13.

When to think twice

If a child is strongly claustrophobic or particularly anxious in the dark, the narrowest passages may feel uncomfortable. Most routes are roomier, though, and you can do the adventure by choosing the wider passageways. For a more timid child it helps to explain beforehand what to expect — often a little advance knowledge is enough to take the edge off.

How to prepare your child

Tell your child in advance that the cave is dim but safe and that they’ll get their own headlamp. Remind them that they can get straight back out to the lobby if they want to, and that the two of you can go in together if you like. When a child knows what to expect, the adventure feels excitingly fun rather than frightening.
